It’s that time of year again! The smell of BBQ pulled pork rising from the slow cookers, charred oven-baked baby back ribs, and the smoke from the flares, firecrackers, and fireworks that light the night sky. And, if you listen carefully, you can even hear the gentle ding of 4th of July email campaigns landing in the inbox.

OK, maybe that last point was a slight exaggeration with everyone busy celebrating arguably the most important date on the US marketing calendar. In 2023, Americans spent an estimated $15.8 billion for the 4th of July celebrations, with $9.5 billion on food and $4.02 billion on alcohol alone (most of that being beer).

So, what do you do if you don’t sell flags, food, or fireworks? Not to worry! You can still bring a little freedom to your subscribers’ inboxes via special promotions, discounts or just wishing them a happy ‘Merica Day. Let’s go through a few campaign examples now.

4th of July email examples

Looking for inspiration for your 4th of July email marketing campaign? We've analyzed a few examples that showcase how to promote special offers, events, or simply celebrate the holiday with your subscribers.

Diesel Dudes

This example from the diesel truck parts and software dealership, The Diesel Dudes, showcases how you can still capitalize on the holiday campaign even if you aren’t selling hot dogs and fireworks.

An example of a patriotic 4th of July email campaign

Why we like it:

  • It’s a great example of how being creative can still get you attention in the inbox, even if your product or service isn’t immediately associated with the 4th of July (they sell truck parts, not t-shirts).

  • Don’t underestimate the power of simplicity! Plain text format emails still have a place in our email marketing strategies.

  • They show a clear understanding of their audience. When reading the email, you can just see how it speaks directly to truck owners, before carefully weaving in their offer.

  • The subject line: MERICA FKYA 🇺🇸🇺🇸🦅🦅🫡🫡 is so on brand, fits with their audience, and just screams open me!

Kampgrounds of America

This example from American campground franchise KOA perfectly demonstrates on how to market to the sense of family and togetherness around the 4th of July celebrations.

An example of a family-orientated 4th of July email marketing campaign

Why we like it:

  • The 4th of July has long been a time for families and friends to get together, celebrating with picnics, barbeques, and firework displays. KOA’s product fits in perfectly with that idea and they’ve capitalized on it in their campaign.

  • The first thing that captures your attention when opening the email is the hero image, which clearly shows family and friends enjoying themselves (with KOA). Customers don’t have to think too hard when imagining themselves using their product.

  • Despite not being a restaurant nor a cookbook brand, KOA added a nice touch to their email by including a how-to video for rustling up some grilled sliders. They don’t stand anything to gain from a product point of view, showing they have a genuine interest in what content their customers are likely to be interested in around the holiday period.

Finn

Pet supplement supplier Finn again demonstrate how a brand can capitalize on the holiday despite their products not having a clear and obvious tie to the 4th of July.

A fourth of July email campaign giving advice to pet owners

Why we like it:

  • It’s easy to forget about our furry friends on the big day, especially when it comes to the evening fireworks show. However, it can be a frightening experience for them as Finn point out in their subject line: Fireworks aren’t fun for everyone 🐶

  • Educational pieces like this work really well as they demonstrate a genuine interest in your audience. Advice such as creating a comfy space, investing in distraction toys and exercising your dog is “free” with no direct financial gain for the brand.

  • The product plug of a calming aid supplement fits naturally with the overall message of the newsletter and doesn’t feel forced.

  • The Spotify playlist is just brilliant too, right?

Brit + Co

Brit + Co is a media company that inspires, educates and entertains real women with a creative spirit – something demonstrated in their latest 4th of July email campaign.

An example of a creative Fourth of July newsletter from Brit + Co

Why we like it:

  • First of all, spot on with that color pallet the newsletter just screams red, white, and blue!

  • The content is audience-focused and creative, including several different ideas and products built around the family picnic theme which is core to many Independence Day celebrations.

  • Beautiful, responsive layout email design that you just glide through while scrolling through using a mobile device.

Trade Gecko

Sometimes a simple holiday greeting is all it takes, as the recently sunsetted Singapore-based SaaS outfit Trade Gecko proved.

Why we like it

  • A simple greeting shows you're engaged with the customer beyond just selling products. It helps foster a sense of connection and strengthens brand loyalty.

  • Sometimes we have a habit to over complicate our campaigns. A simple greeting with a prominent brand logo is enough to effectively deliver your message.

  • You may have noticed the unsubscribe link there in the email footer. They play an important role in protect your email deliverability and are also required by many spam laws around the world.

The Washington Post

One of the country’s most established newspapers shows us a tried and tested promotional tactic. A flash sale is a great way to generate interest around your product during a summer email marketing campaign.

Example of a Independence email campaign from The Washington Post

Why we like it:

  • Clear and prominent CTA. There’s no confusing what subscribers are supposed to be doing after reading this newsletter.

  • Everyone loves a discount or special offer on the 4th of July, which the The Washington post duly obliges with its generous 70% discount.

  • Look at that gorgeous color pallet, makes you just want to belt out the Star-Spangled Banner, right?

  • The black background also stands out once opening the email, with dark mode still in an effective tool in the wheelhouse for marketers.

Target

The 4th of July celebrates American freedom, which veterans bravely fought to defend. Target understands this, and a simple acknowledgment of their service shows appreciation and builds goodwill with its audience, fostering a positive brand image.

Example of a patriotic 4th of July email campaign dedicated to veterans

Why we like it:

  • Veterans are highly respected figures in US society. By acknowledging their service and offering special discounts or offers, you tap into a sense of patriotism which many Americans celebrating the holiday relate to.

  • The simple, 4-step process which veterans go through to receive their discount is clearly highlighted in the third section of the email.

  • The offers and discounts to veterans extends beyond the 4th of July email campaign, again showing a genuine respect to this important section of its community.

Road Scholar

American NGO Road Scholar, a company that provides educational travel programs primarily geared toward older adults, took a slightly different approach to its 4th of July email campaign.

An example of a history quiz survey included in a 4th of July email campaign

Why we like it:

  • A quiz is a fun and interactive way to grab attention and get people to engage with your email. This is more interesting than just a sales message and can leave a more positive impression of your brand.

  • Being involved in the educational sector, a history quiz fits nicely with the brand’s identity, and is a creative idea on what can be included in a 4th of July newsletter.

  • Again, the red, white, and blue color scheme is instantly recognizable as synonymous with the American flag and Independence Day.

4th of July email subject lines

A campaign is only good if you can encourage people to open it, right? To keep your open rates respectable, we’ve added a few email subject line ideas that will be sure to get the creative juices flowing.
